Meet Keeper Deanna
July 22, 2025

This Zookeeper Week, we spent time behind the scenes with Deanna, a dedicated keeper at Northwest Trek. Deanna cares for the wonderful animals in our Free-Roaming Area. We asked her to share what inspired her to become a keeper and what working with wildlife means to her.

What do you wish more people knew about the species you care for?

I wish more people knew just how truly special Northwest Trek is. I can’t help but share how amazing this place and the people are. It’s not just about the animals (though they’re incredible); it’s about the entire team that makes everything possible. From the mechanics and maintenance crew to the front office, admissions, veterinary care, marketing, and of course, the animal care staff—every single person plays a vital role. None of what we do would happen without this kind of teamwork. We’re all here with the same mission: to care for the animals and create unforgettable experiences for every guest who walks through our gates. And I’m genuinely proud to be part of something so meaningful.

Can you share a moment when you really connected with an animal?

One of my recent wins that I’m really proud of is getting a voluntary weight on our trumpeter swan, Trillium. Over the past three weeks, I’ve been building trust with her, just spending time together and slowly working on training her to step onto a scale platform. It’s been a long, patient process, but Trillium has truly become a star. She weighed in at 22 pounds and did it all on her own, motivated by her absolute favorite treat: cracked corn!

Do you have a favorite animal to work with, and why?

I have such a deep, genuine love for our Rocky Mountain goats — every single one of them holds a special place in my heart. And then there’s Luna and Cali, our two incredible moose, whose gentle presence is something I treasure. More recently, I’ve completely fallen for Trillium, our Trumpeter Swan — there’s just something magical about her. But truly, every animal I work with touches me in some way. Even the ones I don’t see every day—they all mean so much to me. Being around them fills me with joy and purpose.

What’s your favorite animal fact to share with guests?

Studies have shown that even domestic cows form deep social bonds — they have best friends, just like we do. And here at Northwest Trek, we see that same connection among our animals. Our bison girls often stick close to their favorite companions, and the elk cows tend to gather in familiar groups, too. It’s beautiful to witness those lasting friendships unfold in such a natural, quiet way.
