Hudson, one of our resident beavers, recently had his wellness exam to ensure he’s in tip-top shape! Hudson was cared for by the wonderful Dr. Cassidy Soehnlein and Veterinary Technician Tracy Cramer, who ensured he received a thorough checkup.

During the exam, Hudson was weighed, x-rays were taken to assess his bones and overall health, and blood was drawn to check his vital stats.

A Closer Look at Beavers: Fascinating Facts

While Hudson’s checkup is vital to ensure his health, it is also an excellent opportunity to share some facts about beavers and their unique traits. Beavers are remarkable creatures with characteristics that make them truly stand out in the animal kingdom.

Tail Talk: Beavers are known to communicate through tail slaps. This tail slap is a warning signal to other beavers or predators, letting them know to stay away. It’s a form of communication that’s as loud as it is effective.

Teeth That Keep Growing: Beavers are known for their impressive teeth—incisors that never stop growing throughout their lifetime! These teeth are designed to help them chew through tough materials like trees and branches. Interestingly, the enamel on the outside of their teeth is bright orange and much harder than the softer inner dentin. This difference in hardness means that as a beaver chews, the softer dentin wears away faster, creating a sharp, chisel-like edge that’s perfect for gnawing.

Master Builders: Of course, beavers are also known for their impressive dam-building skills. With their strong teeth and natural instincts, they can create structures that provide shelter and control the flow of water in their environment. Their dams play a crucial role in their ecosystem by creating wetlands that are home to many other species.

One of the things we love most about Hudson is his caring nature. He’s often seen helping his habitat companion, Chip the beaver, redecorate their shared space at the wildlife park. Hudson and Chip love to work together, bringing branches and twigs into their den to make it even cozier. Whether rearranging their home or simply spending time together, their shared moments reflect the nurturing instincts essential to their well-being.
