At Northwest Trek, the health and well-being of our animal residents is our top priority. Last week, our dedicated veterinary and animal care team had the unique opportunity to provide a wellness exam and specialized treatment for one of our most impressive residents, a massive more than 2,000 pounds 12-year-old bull bison.

As he’s aged, our team has been closely monitoring signs of arthritis, a common condition in aging bison. To ensure he remains comfortable and active, our veterinarians performed a comprehensive health check and administered polysulfated glycosaminoglycan, an injectable treatment designed to help increase joint fluid and slow the progression of arthritis.

Our dedicated team assessed his mobility, hoof condition, and overall health under anesthesia. With this proactive care, the bull will continue to explore the Free-Roaming Area with ease and enjoy his favorite grazing spots.
