Striped Skunk
Mephitis mephitis
These skunk companions have hardly separated since meeting. Sundew and Marigold might be exploring their habitat together or curled up in their cozy den.
Striped
skunk
The scent-spraying skunk meanders about unbothered because its bold black-and-white coloration serves as a warning.

To spray
or not to spray
|
Skunks will only use their spray as a last resort when they feel threatened, as their spray supply is limited. Instead, they first stamp their front feet, arch their backs, and raise their tails while hissing at the predator. |
If the threat continues, skunks will turn around and lift their hind legs to perform a handstand as a final warning before releasing their musk, which can accurately reach up to 12 feet! |
